About us

Environmental sustainability
As the EU's climate bank, we are taking action to preserve natural resources and protect the environment for future generations. We invest in projects in over 160 countries by providing lending and advisory expertise. Our support acts as a catalyst to mobilise private finance by encouraging other public and private investors to match our long-term investment.
We back projects that protect the environment our children will live in while we innovate to make their future more prosperous. In line with our responsible approach to investment, Environmental and Social Issues are reflected in all our projects.
We carefully check that our projects meet our environmental and social principles and standards and conform with our corporate responsibility commitments.

The EIB also works on project and sector related issues under external Mandates, such as the Joint Assistance to Support Projects in European Regions (JASPERS), a technical assistance partnership between the European Commission and the EIB to support projects in Europe. Covering a wide range of areas of expertise and the whole project cycle, from planning to execution, JASPERS operates on the basis of Action Plans designed for each country in cooperation with the national authorities and the European Commission. jaspers.eib.org

Water and wastewater management
Water is the source of life, but also the resource most affected by climate change. An increased frequency of extreme weather severely impacts the availability and quality of freshwater resources, causing water-related natural disasters, such as droughts and floods. By 2025, 800 million people will have to cope with water scarcity.
As one of the largest lenders to the global water sector to date, with close to €79 billion for over 1 600 projects, the EIB is making water security and climate change adaptation a priority.
The Bank’s financing covers investment in the entire water cycle: water resources and supply (for households, industry and agriculture), wastewater collection, treatment and disposal, coastal erosion, flood control and protection.
